Plastic People

When I was toddler I used to talk to mannequins. They looked real enough that I would walk right up to one and say “Hi man!” expecting an answer. When it did not give the proper response, I would stare at it and wait. My mom would tell me it was not a real person and she would have me touch the mannequin’s face and hands. My eyes would get really big and then curiosity would turn to fear.

Today I was talking to one of my elder friends, Sharon and she was commenting about how all the women on “Desperate Housewives” looked exactly alike.  Neither one of us has ever seen the show, but there was a huge photo of them in the newspaper this morning. The women all had the same hair style, hair length, and clothing, look on their faces, body type, makeup, approximate height and weight.

My octogenarian friend said “It is amazing these women look so perfect. They are like plastic people.” I agreed and commented that they reminded me of life sized Barbie dolls or mannequins and that they didn’t even look like real women. I would wager that a great portion of them were not real; with plastic surgery, inplants and photoshopping. It is really sad that they expect women to look like that, all alike with no room for individuality or self-expression. And that show is extremely popular amongst women.

It isn’t real. None of it is real. Hope you realize that plastic melts in the heat.

Unfortunately, these are the modern icons (idolatery) or "images to be imitated", and of course ABC specializes in selling horny unfulfilled ravenous women who have as their core identity the physical realization of sexual union. It's a goal, but not the only goal.

Hi Krista,

It's not just that show either. Look at any of the Real Housewives of ... shows (Bernd is a hardened channel surfer and I catch a glimpse of them now and then ... please do not think that I watch that cr**). So many of them have had the same sort of surgical procedures that they are all starting to look the same. When did individuality become a dirty word?

We are currently watching only two shows on ABC ("Castle" and Once "Upon a Time"). This season it seems that we are primarily watching shows on CBS. But not sitcoms, the only one we watch with a laugh track is Big Bang Theory. I hate being told when to laugh. But I'm hopelessly off topic now.

Enjoyed your article. :)

Hugs,

Dianne
